Growing up in Upstate New York, Robert was interested in architecture at an early age. Always pursuing building and design projects, it was at Northwestern University in Chicago, where he regularly gave architectural tours to fellow students, that he decided to pursue architecture as a career. After graduating from Cornell University in 1974 with a Bachelor of Architecture degree, Robert worked for several New York and San Francisco-based firms gaining experience in both residential and commercial design, before founding Robert Frear Architects in 1986. As an alumnus of Cornell, Robert actively supports the school’s admissions committee and other activities.
Outside of architecture, Robert pursues his love of the performing arts by studying piano. He has also served on the board of Chanticleer, a preeminent singing group in San Francisco. When away from the office, he has traveled extensively to the major cities of the world. Robert currently resides with his partner in San Francisco and Tucson, Arizona.
